The early years of his reign were marked by aggressive military campaigning in Britain under the command of Agricola and in Germany"> under the command of Domitian himself. Subsequent campaigning was undertaken throughout his reign, both for the gain of territory, as well as for the defensive purpose of keeping the increasingly restive German and Sarmatian tribes contained under military pressure. The emperor was energetic in domestic affairs as well he continued the ambitious Flavian building programmes, saw to agricultural and judicial reforms, and harshly attacked corruption in the city government. Finally, in a plot organised by a Praetorian Prefect and Domitian's own wife Domitia, a freeman struck the emperor down in his bath on September 18th, 96 AD
