Septmius Bassianus renamed Marcus Aurelius Antoninus in 196 AD, called Caracalla from ca. 213 AD Caracalla was born at Lugdunum on April 6th 188 AD. He was made Caesar in 196 AD and then elevated to Augustus in 198 AD Caracallamarried Plautilla, the daughter of Severus' Praetorian Prefect, Plautianus, in 202 A.D.. The marriage was unhappy, however, and when Caracalla had Plautianus overthrown from his position in 205 A.D., he used the occasion as an excuse to send Plautilla into exile (she was subsequently executed, in 211). The nickname Caracalla comes from caracallus, the latin name for a hooded cloak worn by the Germans. The Emperor took to wearing this garment during his campaign against the Germans in 213 A.D., and it subsequently became a fashion rage in the city of rome and other urban ceners. Caracalla was murdered on April 8, 217 A.D., in the midst of his campaign against the Parthians.
