Titus Aurelius Fulvius Boionius Arrius Antoninus adopted as Titus Aelius Caesar Antoninus, born Sept 19th 86 AD Antoninus was born at Lanuvium into a family which had emigrated from Nemausus in Gaul. Both his grandfather and father had severed as Consul and Antoninus himself assumed the Consulship in ca. 130 AD, and later served as Proconsul of asia. After the death of Aelius early in 138 AD, Hadrian adopted Antoninus in February as his heir. In turn Antoninus adopted his wife's nephew Marcus Aurelius and Aelius' son Lucius Versus as his own heirs. Upon Hadiran's death on July 10th 138 AD, Antoninus succeeded smoothly to the throne and began convincing the reluctant Senate to consecrate Hadrian for these dutiful efforts he was awarded the title 'Pius'.
